Ukrainians in Philadelphia
The Ukrainian community in Philadelphia has a rich history, with the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants arriving in Philadelphia during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These early immigrants were primarily peasants and laborers who left Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire) in search of economic opportunities and to escape political and social unrest.
Today, the Ukrainian American community in Philadelphia is centered around various organizations, cultural centers, and churches that serve the Ukrainian population. One prominent institution is the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC) located in Jenkintown, just outside Philadelphia. The UECC provides educational programs, cultural events, and a venue for community gatherings.
